Vocabulary:
o Surrealism - A twentieth century avant-garde art movement. Surrealism was influenced by the theories of Sigmund Freud. Surrealist works can have a realistic, though irrational style, precisely describing dreamlike fantasies.
o Giorgio de Chirico (Italian, 1888-1978) Metaphysical/Surrealistic painter
o René Magritte (Belgian, 1898-1967) Surrealistic painter

Objectives (Arkansas Dept. of Education Art Standards):
o Understand historical significance of Surrealism (1.3., 1.5.,1.9. [psychology], 3.9.)
o Recognize repeating themes and symbols in artists' works. (1.1., 1.2., 1.11., 3.1., 3.3.,3.6.)
o Create poster in Surrealistic style (1.4., 2.1., 2.2., 2.6.)

o Discuss thematic use of symbols and subject matter
o Discuss historical background around Surrealism
o Discuss dreamlike interiors and landscapes

Activity:
o Create a surrealistic dreamlike vision in collage from magazines
