Contrast, balance, emphasis
5th Grade

Materials:
o Paper
o Tempera paint

Resources:
o Paint brushes
o Palettes
o Palette knives
o Rinsing water

Vocabulary:
o Contrast: A large difference between elements in an artwork; in color, value, texture, etc.
o Emphasis: the dominant (weight) feature or features of an artwork; something singled out, stressed, or drawn attention to
o Balance: A principle of design, it refers to the way the elements of art are arranged to create a feeling of stability in a work
o Symmetrical balance - The parts of an image or object organized so that one side duplicates, or mirrors, the other
o Asymmetrical balance - when one side of a composition does not reflect the design of the other.
o Imaginary; made up, out of your head, fanciful

o Understand use of contrast, balance, and emphasis in paintings (A.1.1., A.3.1.)
o Make personal choice of subject to represent in artwork (A.1.4.)
o Understand use of thumbnail drawings to explore design options (A.1.1., A.3.1.)
o Create thumbnails to explore design options (A.2.3.)
o Create painting from imagination (A.2.1., A.2.2., A.2.7., A.3.1.)
o Present and discuss own art work and artwork of others (A.1.2., A.1.11., A.3.1., A.3.3., A.3.5., A.3.4., A.3.6..)
o Demonstrate proper use of tools and materials (1.7., 2.5.)

Introduction:
o Review contrast, balance, emphasis (from previous lessons)
o Demonstrate thumbnail sketches to explore design ideas
o Demonstrate transferring thumbnail design onto “canvas”

Activity:
o Make 3 thumbnail sketches of different content and design ideas
o Copy favorite thumbnail onto final “canvas”
o Paint imaginary room (every color used MUST be mixed; it cannot be right out of the bottle)

Critique:
o Each student displays their work and participates in class critique.
o What is the scene?
o What colors were used?
o What do you like about it? Why?

Assessment:
o Student participation during discussion and critique
o Analysis of involvement in activity and final painting
