Personal Artist Book - Handmade Paper
Small group project
7th/8th Grades
Materials:
o Scrap paper
o Various materials for paper and pressing
o Paints, pencils, charcoal, etc.
Resources:
o Mold and deckles, screens
o Tubs
o Blender
Vocabulary:
o Mold: the lower screen that holds the pulp
o Screen: forms the pulp-restraining surface
o Deckle: the upper frame that encloses the wet pulp on the mold. Unlike the mold, the deckle is a frame which is entirely open
o Art books: any handmade or altered book
Objectives (Arkansas Dept. of Education Art Standards):
o Understand proper use of tools and materials (A.1.7., A.2.5.)
o Understand color theory and how it relates to blending colored paper (A.1.1.)
o Collaborate with small group in making paper (A.1.11., A.2.1., A.2.2., A.2.5., A.2.8.)

Introduction:
o Discuss history of art-books
o Show example of accordion style book
o Demonstrate paper making process
o Discuss safe use of tools and materials
o Discuss working as a group
Activity:
o Blend colored construction paper and other materials to make paper; make pressings
o Individually, make personal accordion style art-book from paper (using 4 sheets). Using an unifying theme, decorate each exposed page when unfolded (can press into or paste onto objects, paint, draw, etc)
Assessment:
o Student participation during discussion
o Analysis of involvement in activity final paper
