Acrylic Painting - painted constructions in the style of Frank Stella
8th Grade
Materials:
o Scratch paper and pencil
o Poster board, cardboard boxes
o Acrylic paint and watercolor paper
Resources:
o Matte knives, hot-glue guns
o Paint brushes, palettes, palette knives, jars for water
Vocabulary:
o Franks Stella: (1936-) New York artist known for non-rectangular shaped canvasses and eventually paintings that stood out from the wall, as in a relief sculpture.
o 3-diemensional paintings: paintings that are done on more than one surface plane
o Relief sculpture: - A type of sculpture in which form projects from a background.
o Form: 3 dimensional shape
o Non-representational abstraction: Artworks having no recognizable subject matter
Objectives (Arkansas Dept. of Education Art Standards):
o Discuss the artwork of Stella and how he created 3-D painted constructions; discuss how art patronage affects artwork created (1.1., 1.2., 1.3., 1.5., 1.8., 3.6)
o Discuss proper and safe use of tools (1.7.)
o In a team, create thumbnail studies for design ideas (1.11., 2.3. )
o Construct and paint artwork (2.1., 2.2., 2.5., 2.6., 2.7., 2.8., 3.1.)
o Discuss and develop critique points when viewing work (3.2.)
o Critique own and others artwork (3.3. 3.4.)
Introduction:
o Power Point presentation of Stella's artwork, particularly his painted constructions
o Review creating thumbnail studies
o Demonstrate proper and safe use of tools
o Discuss transferring design into 3-D form
Activity:
o Choose team
o Make 6 thumbnail studies to explore design ideas
o Use favorite sketch for creating shapes for painted construction
o Cut shapes, paint and hot-glue together to create final artwork
Critique:
o Display and discuss own and others' work
o Use student generated critique points
Assessment:
o Student participation during discussion
o Analysis of involvement in activity and final artwork
o Student participation in critique
